About Joseph Pilates
This remarkable & proven system that we teach at Exhale Pilates London was created by Joseph Hubertus Pilates born in 1883 in Germany.
In 1912 he moved to England to further his training as a boxer and to teach boxing and self-defence. In 1914 after WW1 he was interned in a camp for enemy aliens in Lancaster. It was there he taught wrestling and self-defence and where he started to devise his system of original exercises that later became ‘Contrology’. He was transferred to another camp on the Isle of Man and became a nurse helping with wartime diseases and injured. It was in these hospitals that he created equipment to rehabilitate them taking springs from the bed and providing exercises to the bed ridden.
In 1926 he moved to New York after being invited to train the New York German Army and opened up his first studio in a part of town close to several dance studios. It was in this studio he continued developing and refining his method and apparatus right up to his death in 1967.
It is due to the support of his teachers from all around the world that allows us to keep this legacy alive. A legacy that is endorsed and recommended by Physiotherapist, Osteopath’s, General Practitioners & Sports coaches.

I discovered Pilates 18 years ago when I met my teacher Stephanie Guimond who is now a dear friend. Her passion and knowledge was addictive and from that moment, I was hooked!
I was an adrenaline junkie constantly searching for the latest fitness fad, however nothing quite kept my attention both physically and mentally as much as Pilates and I was reaping the benefits for days after. It was during my sessions that a light bulb went off in my head and I thought – I would love to do this!
After much research I learnt that to become a true Pilates teachers is a long term commitment. In fact 700 hours of teaching, observation and training all need to happen to qualify and sadly, juggling this huge commitment with a full time job was close to impossible, so the idea was sadly parked.
Then, in 20XX I was involved in a serious car accident that left me with a compressed spine, unable to lie, sit or walk without pain. I was unable to work for 3 months and unable to go back to any normal type of exercise routine. I underwent twice-weekly physio for the first year and gradually built up to basic Pilates moves. It was through practicing Pilates that enabled me to alleviate the pain and through my own Pilates training I am now able to maintain my strength & continue to improve my fitness whilst staying out of pain.
It was therefore final, I had to do this! I so desperately wanted to help people through similar situations, but it wasn’t until I delved into the types of Pilates courses available that I discovered the classical Pilates method and how it helps everyone. So in 2011 I enrolled and completed a Power Pilates XXX course.
My dream was always to open a studio to help others realize their abilities. Whether it be overcoming back pain, helping with anxiety/depression or working with sports professionals to enhance their current training regime. Giving back and watching clients become stronger, more flexible, shake off bad postural habits and fall in love with the classical method just like I did all those years ago is wonderful to see.
My heart and soul is in Exhale Pilates London and the works of Joseph Pilates and I can’t wait to share it with as many people as possible.
