Classical Pilates, simply, is the exact method discovered by Joseph Pilates. Our Classical Pilates studio teaches this truly beneficial and proven method using apparatus that is as close to Pilates’ actual equipment as possible. EPL and many of the Pilates studios/instructors out there trust that Mr. Pilates, a true genius, designed his apparatus with great thought; from the width of the Cadillac and Trapeze, the height of the Wunda Chair in relation to the pedal, to the strength of the springs on the Reformer. Decisions that were purposeful, mindful, and necessary to create minimum transitional moves for maximum flow.
Joe Pilates designed the specialised apparatus to deepen the work of the method. The equipment works to tone muscles as well as balance the muscular force at the joint level. We know JP was a genius and way ahead of his time as certain benefits are only being discovered and clinically proven in recent years. For example, the exact combination of low impact force on the joints plus the stretching and strengthening of movements in Pilates has been proved to actually promote positive cell growth in the bones and joints; thus becoming extremely beneficial for those suffering with osteoperosis/arthritis etc. It stimulates circulation by increasing flexibility, joint range of motion and facilitates proper musculoskeletal alignment.
Mat Pilates was developed to experience the resistance and impact of the springs/equipment through using your own body weight and muscle connection. ‘Mat Pilates work is the ‘core’ of the Pilates Method of body conditioning. This work is the most challenging, strengthening the core muscles and limbering the spine.’ We tend to involve various pieces of small equipment such as weights, bands, and magic circles, all to deepen the connections in your own body. EPL limits it’s client number to 6 people maximum per class to ensure certain principles are achieved when exercising: proper form, good flow, concentration, creating the safest environment for everyone, especially those recovering from injury/illness.
Our other classical Pilates classes are used with the Tower apparatus. The Tower unit was designed to replicate the strength in the springs from the reformer and apparatus on the Cadillac, but used in a more economic way (against a wall upright). Therefore our body will be on the mat to combine the mat method, using your own body weight, with the weight and resistance of the springs. Again Classes are limited in number of people able to attend to maintain principles and so the clients can receive maximum attention for maximum results.
The ideal way to learn Classical Pilates is through private sessions where the instructor can cater the session to you and your body’s particular needs. You are then also able to experience the full range of Pilates equipment; Reformer, Mat, Cadillac, chairs, barrels, and all the other exciting pieces. Using the apparatus closest to Pilates’ designs plus performing his actual method of exercise in the way he intended, is the perfect equation to achieve the best results you can. This way you are also guaranteed to execute the exercises in proper form, we can alter certain movements if you are recovering from injury, or if you have specific fitness goals you wish to achieve, or even if have a difficult schedule that restricts your attendance to classes!
Pilates, whether it’s equipment or mat based, is beneficial to everyone. Especially if you are recovering from pregnancy, injury, surgery, illness, the method helps to better your body & mind’s reaction plus shorten the total length of time to complete recovery; so be anything but scared of getting involved! How? by promoting new neuromuscular patterns, heighten proprioception (body awareness), increase co-ordination, of course sculpt and tone your body, prevent future injury and reduce pain, strengthen/re-align & decompress the spine, relieve nerve and disc pressure.
