About the studios

What other equipment do you have?

We are a fully equipped studio so have all of the classical equipment.

In Primrose Hill we have Pilates by Design equipment and in North Finchley we have Gratz.

In private sessions, you may spend time working on the Wunda Chair, Electric Chair, Pedi pole, Small barrel, Ladder barrel and other small pieces of equipment ie. Foot Corrector, Spine Corrector, Magic Circle.

Do you have changing rooms and showers?

Yes, we do have facilities for you to change, but sadly there are no showers available.

We do have lockers in each studio though to keep your items safe whilst you exercise.

How many people are in a class?

In Primrose Hill we can cater to 7 clients in a Tower class and up to 4 in a Reformer class.

In North Finchley we have a maximum of 5 participants in all classes.

Will I be the only one in the studio when I have a private session?

Sadly not.

We generally have other sessions going on at the same time during the usual studio operating hours.

If you would prefer a quieter time, please speak to a member of the front of house team, who will always try to accommodate (where they can!) your request, however we unfortunately cannot guarantee you will be the only client in the studio at any one time.

Are the classes for male and females?

Yes, they are all mixed.

New to Exhale

What clothes shall I wear/what shall I bring?

We suggest wearing clothes that you feel comfortable moving in. For example leggings, T shirt, shorts etc.

Whilst we provide filtered water, it is a good idea to bring your water bottle and maybe a towel, however this is not essential.

I’m not very flexible, can I still join in?

Of course!

All of our teachers are incredible! They will offer modifications to all exercises to cater for all body types and abilities.

Flexibility (and improving it!) is a huge part and benefit of practising regular Pilates.

Am I too old for Pilates?

Not a chance!

You are never too old, and can participate in private one to one sessions even if you think a class is moving a little too fast.

There are no high intensity movements or jumping, and there are pieces of equipment that are easily accessible (ie. The Cadillac or Chairs) if you struggle to bend down. The teachers can give you 1:1 attention to ensure you are kept safe at all times.

How often can I do Pilates?

You practise Pilates as often as you like!

Classical Pilates will leave you feeling worked, but you won’t have huge aches and pains for days after so you can do it several times a week.

We recommend doing sessions 2-3 times a week.

I’m a newbie…how do I book in?

We recommend that all new clients to Exhale take up one of our new client offers, even if you have done Pilates before.

We have 3 introductory packages available, all of them include at least 1 private session tailored to you, which will introduce you to the equipment and prepare you for group classes:

– Tower intro (£50, 2 week expiry): 1x private, 1x group Tower class

– Reformer intro (£95, 2 week expiry): 2x privates

– Combo intro (£115, 4 week expiry): 2x privates, 1x Tower class

What is the difference between Tower and Reformer?

The Tower is a mat based workout with all of the equipment on a structure on the wall, it has; leg springs, arm springs, a roll back and push through bar. The classes will be varied and the teachers will plan a class that works the full body.

The Reformer is a horizontal moving bed with four springs and two arm straps that can also be transitioned to leg straps. You can sit, lie and stand on the Reformer, as well as place a box on top to lie/sit on for some exercises. The Reformer classes follow a set sequence; Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced. The teachers will add variations and modifications for set exercises, but the classes will always follow a set structure depending on the level of the class.

I’m pregnant/have just had a baby, can I join a class?

Unfortunately our classes are not suitable for pre and post-natal clients.

We do have teachers who specialise in pre & post-natal Pilates who would be happy to teach you privately in a one to one.

Please wait until you have had your Doctor’s approval to exercises after giving birth (minimum 6 weeks after a natural birth and 12 weeks after C section).

I have an injury, can I join in?

We would always recommend doing a private session first, please communicate with the team (the reception staff and teacher) beforehand and give as much detail as possible.

This will help us understand and prepare for your session and give us more information so we can recommend the best teachers and classes for you.

How do I sign up to classes and privates?

You can book on our website or the branded Exhale Pilates app.

We use the Mindbody booking system, so when you are all setup online, you can purchase credits, book and cancel classes/privates/duets/trios and view your schedule.

General Information

Can I lose weight doing Pilates?

We tend not to focus on weight loss in our sessions, as we direct the intention towards deepening the mind body connection and gaining strength.

With a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise, weight loss is possible through Pilates as it compliments other training styles, however, given the classes/privates aren’t HIIT style or cardio, then Pilates alone will likely tone the body rather than increase fat loss.

Do you teach children/teenagers?

Yes!

We are able to teach children and teenagers but in a one to one, private session with a teacher.

We do allow clients aged 16 and over to join the classes if the teacher feels they are ready to participate in a class safely.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

Pilates can strengthen your core muscles, unlike any other exercise.

With a deep understanding of how our bodies work, (in our opinion), Classical Pilates is the best work out for developing core strength. However, it does much more than that, such as alleviating pain, relieving stress and boosting your mood.

Is Pilates the same as Yoga?

Pilates and Yoga have some similarities but generally the exercises are different.

We use apparatus with springs, that add resistance and assist with alignment of the body. Pilates is less spiritual than Yoga and centres on the connection between mind and body.

Once the prerequisites of 25hrs of Classical Pilates for the Full Comprehensive have been met. You are invited to a 1:1 with the studio Founder before your place on the course can be confirmed.

Once successful you will need to pay a £1000 deposit to secure your place on the course.

You do not need a 1:1 with the studio Founder to join the Mat course.

Can I practise in the Exhale studios?

Yes of course! It is important to check with the studio availability with the studio manager prior to coming in.

What is the duration of each course?

The Full Comprehensive programme is 12 months.

The Master Mat course is 3 months.

Other than the training weekend will there be any other learning opportunities?

You bet!

There are monthly training workshops (provided to you at no additional cost) that you are expected to attend.

There are also guest presenters and teachers who deliver workshops at Exhale Pilates. These would be fantastic for you to attend – but would be at an additional cost.

What are the cost of the courses?

The Full Comprehensive is £4995. This can be paid over 3 instalments.

Can I teach after I have completed the course?

Yes!

Don’t forget, that with a Mat qualification, you can set up anywhere!

Many apprentices also go on to invest in equipment and set up their own studios, whilst others go and work for other facilities.

How many hours of training should I be doing a week when I am on the course?

You should aim for 10 hours a week for the Full Comprehensive and 3 hours a week for the Master Mat.

Are there any additional costs other than the cost of the courses themselves?

Yes.

You will need to attend regular classes and one to ones within the studio. There are also some great books on Exhale’s reading list that you might like to purchase too.

You may also wish to attend additional workshops run by your studio or external training centres.

It is important to also factor in any travel, transport and/or accommodation you would incur during the duration of your course.

What are some of the challenges I will face?

The Full Comprehensive programme is a very intense course that requires a lot of commitment. Many people join the course with full time jobs, family commitments, living far away from the studio etc.

So it is important to be able to find the time to be able to practise. It is also critical to find a ‘workout buddy’ to train and teach with. We will always try our best to introduce you to other apprentices, but it important to form your own relationships with potential buddies.

During your class, ask the question “Could I see myself teaching here?” – that will answer your question!

What is the difference between Classical and Contemporary Pilates?

Classical Pilates is the original and authentic style of Pilates created by Joseph Pilates and originally called ’Contrology’.

Contemporary Pilates has deviated away from the original method and created new adaptations or new interpretations of the original work.

Are these courses a level 3 qualification?

No.

A level 3 qualification aligns itself more with the fitness industry. This style of Pilates is often what you will find at your local gym or leisure centre.

What qualification will I receive at the end of the course?

Fully Comprehensive:

You will become a Full Comprehensive teacher on all of the Pilates apparatus. Currently, the Pilates industry is unregulated however the Classical Pilates industry recognises the qualification and the level of training each student has gone thorough to qualify.
