Did you know that the Wunda Chair, designed in the 1930’s which Joseph Pilates called his mini gym can also flip upside down and be used as a traditional chair! 💁🏻‍♀️

He created this dual functionality for his clients who lived in small apartments in New York, so they could workout at home without taking up too much space.

And wow does this small but mighty apparatus give you a workout! 🔥

We’ve chosen 3 exercises that you can do using an ordinary chair at home(or in the office!) to help boost circulation, core strength and space in your spine.

Single leg stretch, Criss Cross and Spine Stretch

The first part is using the back of the chair and an elevated base to give deeper feedback to your core. The second is to come to the front of any chair/sofa and enjoy some of our favourite Pilates exercises.

Whether used for a hard-core Pilates workout 💪🏼 or as a functional chair turned upside down🪑the Wunda chair is a key component of the Pilates practice and system and truly embodies the principles of strength, flexibility, and mindful movement. 🙏🏼

Calling all gym bro’s 🏋

Hands up if you’re guilty of only training your chest, biceps, legs, and abs when you’re at the gym and neglect your posterior chain?

It’s vital to not only understand the importance of posterior chain muscles, but to concentrate on recruiting them when working all muscle groups.

This will help to not only to keep your posture on point and support alignment but to minimise imbalances in the body which lead to injury, ie back and shoulder issues which is a common problem we see a lot.

The good news, Joe Pilates considered all of this when he created his method Contrology so when you take a class with us you’ll be covered.

Outside of the studio, here are 3 tips to look after your posterior chain

🏋️‍♂️ Include dedicated posterior chain exercises: ie deadlifts, squats, lunges, hip thrusts, and rows into your routine BUT concentrate on recruiting your back and core muscles when doing so.

⚖️ Balance your workouts: Ensure you train both the front and back of your body equally as well as not just concentrating on weight sessions or cardio.

🧘‍♂️ Take recovery sessions BUT make sure they are recovery sessions not another high muscle stimulating workout. Your joints, muscles and mind need a break to and to get you the results you want quicker

👌Focus on proper form: Correct form is crucial for effectively engaging the posterior chain. You’ll get more bang for your buck and get you to your goals without having to stop your good intentions and routine due to injury.
