A topical one that really needs to be busted!

Just because you’re on a Reformer doesn’t mean you’re doing Pilates 😬

At Exhale, we teach classical Pilates, the method as Joseph Pilates intended, not just sweating and pulsing to pop music (as fun as that may be!)

Pilates is exploding and Reformer is leading the way. There is a lot of the market today that is branded ‘reformer’ but has very little to do with Pilates.

Here’s how to spot a faux Reformer class, nothing wrong with this, but it’s just not Pilates. And transparency is important.

It’s Not Pilates If…

Fast, high-rep movements dominate the class
→ Pilates focuses on precision and quality over quantity.

There’s no structure or flow to the session
→ Real Pilates follows a methodical sequence, not random moves.

Instructors don’t give corrections or hands-on guidance.
→ Pilates is a teaching method, not just a follow-along class.

Your instructor can’t explain why you’re doing what you’re doing
→ Pilates is intentional. Every move has a purpose.

There is room for all (safe) exercise in this industry. It caters for all kinds of clients and their personal preferences.

It’s our responsibility as studio owners to be transparent about our offerings so clients can make an informed decision when booking sessions 🫶🏻

“I’m not flexible enough for Pilates.”

We hear this one all the time, and it’s certainly a myth that needs to be busted!

You don’t need to be flexible to start.
You do Pilates to become more flexible, strong, and in control of your body.

So no, touching your toes isn’t a requirement, you just need to show up and our teachers will take care of the rest.

If you have limiting beliefs thats stopping you from starting Pilates, this is your sign to book that session 🙌

Why Hands-On Adjustments Matter in Mat Pilates

In Mat Pilates, we don’t have springs, straps, or bars to strengthen, lengthen and support us.

That’s why I always remind teachers and apprentices that our hands and bodies become the apparatus on the mat.

Hands on adjustment aren’t just about “fixing” a client. They’re about helping clients feel alignment, connection and activation in a stronger way.

Through intelligent hands on, we can: 
✨Provide better alignment and movement
✨Support activation of the right muscle engagement
✨Encourage release where there’s tension
✨Deepen body awareness

These tactile cues bring a whole new level of understanding and results to a clients practice one that words, or demonstration alone can’t always achieve.

Because in Pilates, especially on the mat, your hands are the bridge between instruction, experience and ultimately results.

The Tendon Stretch ✨

This exercise isn’t just about flexibility or “getting your heels down.” It’s a whole-body connection.
 An opportunity to explore how breath, control, lift and length all work together. 🙏🏼

On the Reformer, Tendon Stretch reveals how evenly you can load through the feet,connect through the legs, and lift up out of your centre.

This week, I’m cueing my fabulous teacher Emily to refine her movement. To find that deeper internal connection rather than following the rhythm (which is also important in this exercise)

We slowed it down… To feel and to move from a place of true inner strength 💪🏼 the kind that builds that internal heat 🔥 or shower 🚿 as Joseph Pilates called it.

Over the next two weeks I’ll share how we continued to build on this, exploring Tendon Stretch through other apparatus,new cues and subtle shifts to find even greater connection.

That’s why it’s important to trust the process. 🙏🏼

When you’re training to become a Pilates teacher it can feel like you’re putting in the hours and not sure it’s going anywhere.

If you keep showing up, one day it all starts to make sense, in your body and in your mind.

It’s not a quick fix, it’s a slow burn and it should be.

If you’re on your journey to becoming a Pilates teacher, or you’re thinking about it - don’t rush it.

Keep showing up and you will get there in the end, and wow is it rewarding.

Because becoming and being a Pilates teacher is a never ending learning journey! ✨
