It felt so good to be back with the Exhale team 🫶🏼

Last Saturday, the wonderful @brookesilerpilates led a workshop for our teachers, filled with energy, connection, and growth.
 There’s something so special about watching our team learn, move, and grow together. ❤️

I’m so grateful to have a legend like Brooke as part of our Exhale family. Her knowledge, passion, and generosity always lift the room, and she reminded the team what we’re truly capable of when we stay connected to the work.

It was also my first time seeing everyone since coming back from Dubai, and it honestly filled my heart, reconnecting with familiar faces and meeting some of our amazing new teachers who’ve recently joined the Exhale family. I really do miss this part so much when I’m away.

Supporting our teachers through continued education and growth has always been at the heart of Exhale, and it’s something I’ll be evolving even more in 2026.

There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing our community grow stronger together 🤍

A topical one that really needs to be busted!

Just because you’re on a Reformer doesn’t mean you’re doing Pilates 😬

At Exhale, we teach classical Pilates, the method as Joseph Pilates intended, not just sweating and pulsing to pop music (as fun as that may be!)

Pilates is exploding and Reformer is leading the way. There is a lot of the market today that is branded ‘reformer’ but has very little to do with Pilates.

Here’s how to spot a faux Reformer class, nothing wrong with this, but it’s just not Pilates. And transparency is important.

It’s Not Pilates If…

Fast, high-rep movements dominate the class
→ Pilates focuses on precision and quality over quantity.

There’s no structure or flow to the session
→ Real Pilates follows a methodical sequence, not random moves.

Instructors don’t give corrections or hands-on guidance.
→ Pilates is a teaching method, not just a follow-along class.

Your instructor can’t explain why you’re doing what you’re doing
→ Pilates is intentional. Every move has a purpose.

There is room for all (safe) exercise in this industry. It caters for all kinds of clients and their personal preferences.

It’s our responsibility as studio owners to be transparent about our offerings so clients can make an informed decision when booking sessions 🫶🏻

This time last week, our new apprentices took their very first step towards becoming fully comprehensive Classical Pilates teachers, and what a weekend it was.

Watching them begin this journey always moves us as we know what lies ahead. It’s never just a certification it becomes transformative in skills, understanding and confidence.

Over the weekend we saw incredible passion, focus and commitment from everyone. Their determination reminded us why we do what we do and why we have such passion to preserve Joseph Pilates original Method.

‘Why doing Classical exercises on Contemporary apparatus doesn’t feel the same’

There is a noticeable shift happening as more studios are embracing the word ‘Classical’ in their branding.

The intention is positive, to reconnect with the origins of the work. But if you’ve ever wondered why Pilates feels different from studio to studio, here’s a reason why.

Classical Pilates is not just a label or a list of original exercises. It’s a complete system, where the movement and apparatus were designed to work together with purpose.

Over time Pilates has expanded and been interpreted in many directions, which has helped more people access and enjoy the work and that evolution matters.

At Exhale we often say ‘feel the difference’.

Classical exercises on Contemporary equipment naturally create a different experience, because the apparatus shapes the body just as much as the movement does.

Here are 5 reasons why:

1️⃣ Spring Tension  Classical springs are heavier, equal in strength and positioned to demand deeper connection through the centre rather than the reliance of the limbs.
2️⃣ Dimensions and Geometry
Variations in frame height, carriage length or foot bar angle affect alignment, muscle recruitment and the whole sensation of an exercise.
3️⃣ Strap Length and Pathway Where straps sit and how they pull determines which muscles fire. Change the pathway and the challenge changes too.
4️⃣ Feedback and Support
Classical apparatus gives intentional guidance: push here, lift there, stay connected. Contemporary designs often allow more freedom, which can feel lighter and more liberating, but that built-in intention can be lost.
5️⃣ Movement Intention The original exercises were designed for the original apparatus. Update the apparatus and the intention evolves too.

This isn’t about hierarchy or policing language. It’s about clarity.

The work isn’t better or worse.
Just different.
And that difference is worth understanding.
